LOS ANGELES, CA — The Imagen Foundation has announced the nominees for the 24th Annual Imagen (Spanish for "image") Awards, honoring positive portrayals of Latinos and Latino culture in entertainment. The awards will be presented at a black-tie dinner gala on Friday, August 21st, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. Major sponsors of the event include Nielsen, The Walt Disney Company, Disney/ABC Television Group, The Lear Family Foundation and Latino Public Broadcasting.
The Imagen (pronounced ee-mah-hen) Awards program was established in 1985 from a suggestion by veteran television producer Norman Lear to encourage and recognize the positive portrayals of Latinos in the media. Later, as The Imagen Foundation, it expanded its programs and initiatives to further its mission to serve as a bridge between the Latino community and the entertainment industry in providing access, education, and resources for Latinos both in the industry, as well as those seeking careers in entertainment. LATIN HEAT NEWS & ENTERTAINMENT — When screenwriter/author Josefina Lopez suggested to the other authors she was working on a book entitled 8 ways to Say I Love My Life And Mean It, that it be adapted into a theatrical piece, no one would have expected that it would garner an Imagen Award nomination. This past Wednesday, the authors and actress who performed the monologues elated were to have been nominated for such a prestigious award.
"How exciting! How wonderful that our production about celebrating the lives of Latinas and women is being celebrated with a nomination! Another reason to say I love my life!", said Lopez when asked her reaction to the nomination.
8 ways is a collection of monologues, derived from a forthcoming book by the same name, written by eight women and based on their lives. The eight writers include author and screenwriter Josefina Lopez (Hungry Woman In Paris, Real Women Have Curves); author Susan Orosco (Latin Power: Seven Powers all Latinos Have Upon Which to Build an Empire); Bel Hernandez Castillo (Latinheat.com publisher and editor-in-chief); Margo De Leon Guerra (Voces Latinas club president); communications specialist Laura De Anda, implementation consultant Joanna Diaz; producer and screenwriter Nancy De Los Santos Reza, and Rita Mosqueda Marmolejo.
The 8 ways theater performance inspired audiences during its successful 10-show run at Casa 0101, in March 2009 and was named Editor's Hot Pick by LatinoLA.com. The monologues were performed by actresses Jacqueline Calderon-Guido, Kikey Castillo, Michelle Castillo, Yolie Cortez, Yvonne DeLaRosa, Sophia Santi and Iliana G. Wrinkle. Rita Mosqueda Marmolejo performed her own piece.
The play's success is in part owed to the direction of the pieces by directors Emmanuel Deleage who directed four and Hector Rodriguez who directed two of the monologues.
